What is Invokana?
Invokana (generic: canagliflozin) is an oral medications approved by the FDA for the treatment of Type-2 Diabetes. Invokana and similar medicines belong to a class of medications known as sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, which have been shown to lower blood sugar in adults with Type-2 Diabetes.
What is Ketoacidosis?
Also known as acidosis or diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), ketoacidosis is a condition that causes the body to produce excess levels of blood acids, or ketones, which can lead to a host of medical complications, including organ failure, diabetic coma, and even death.
Food and Drug Administration’s Investigation of Invokana
In May 2015, the FDA released a drug safety announcement stating that it was investigating reports that certain Type-2 Diabetes medications caused a serious medical condition known as ketoacidosis. This investigation was launched after the FDA had reviewed multiple adverse event reports from patents who were seriously injured or hospitalized due to ketoacidosis after taking Type-2 Diabetes medications, including Invokana.
In the FDA’s announcement, the agency warned patients that they should seek immediate medical attention if they experience any symptoms of ketoacidosis, including:
- Difficulty Breathing
- Nausea/Vomiting
- Confusion
- Unusual Fatigue or Sleepiness
- Unexplained Abdominal Pain
Invokana has also been linked to reports of:
- Kidney Failure
- Excessive Weight Loss
- Heart Attack
- Stroke
